Q&A w/ Andrea Barto, Director of Software Engineering @ WellSky

Thanks so much for taking the time to speak with us, Andrea! First, please introduce yourself! 

Hi, I'm Andrea Barto and  I've been in technology for over 20 years.  At WellSky, I'm a Director of Engineering for the Home Health care software.  My teams are responsible for developing claim management and financial reports.  I live in Dripping Springs, Texas with my husband and daughter. 

What are you looking forward to at Women in Tech Texas? 

I'm excited to hear about diverse experiences and learn about new trends in technology, especially around security and operational excellence.  With all the recent cybersecurity issues, I want to see how everyone is evolving to support their business continuity plans.  Finally, I look forward to being inspired by others.   

What would be your advice to other women in tech who are coming up in the industry? 

For those coming up in the industry, I think it is important to grow in depth of expertise whether that be development or UX. It is also great to get exposed to many things to learn architecturally and learn about the market trends.  Be curious and find others that are passionate to share their subject matter expertise with you.  They don't have to be in your group to be an ally or mentor. 

Women in Tech Texas is built on community; what advice would you give to our attendees on building your network and furthering your presence? 

At the conference, try to share your LinkedIn with others and be brave to introduce yourself to others.  Be involved with the community after the conference too!  There are a lot of amazing user groups. Pick one or two to try out based on your interests. You can also volunteer to give back to the future of STEM whether that is high school or college.
